Breanna Anderson, recipient of the 2017 Dr. Rex and Bev Leach Animal Health Bursary, having completed a Bachelor of Science degree in Agriculture in 2015, is now working on a Master of Science program at the University of Saskatchewan titled “Refining Whole Plant Corn Grazing Recommendations for Western Canada.”
When cattle graze corn, they often choose the cob first, which may lead to ruminal acidosis from the rapid fermentation of the starch that decreases production efficiency and may lead to secondary infection and sometimes death. Breanna’s project looks at altering management techniques to reduce the risk of acidosis for the beef cow. Whole-plant corn grazing is becoming increasingly common on the prairies due to its reduction in total feeding costs. The Community Foundation is pleased to have been a part of this project.
